I Remember the Vacation of ‘83
I remember the skunk filled air of burning plastic that my father forgot to remove from the butcher’s sausage.
And listening to his squeal echo through every campsite as he attempted to remove the putrid plastic from the hellishly hot meat.
I remember the tear that took its serpentine path down my face as the screeching seagull sped away with my Yoda action figure.
I remember the accident I heard from my window that woke me with the busting of glass and bending of metal.
And my father standing there with his bandaged hands and the look of complete apathy saying “Cars aren’t Fisher-Price toys.”
I remember tripping, stumbling, and rolling, and still making the catch of the softball that my sister popped up.
And I remember running but failing escape as she took a punishing swing of the bat for ruining her hit.
I remember the hum of the VW Bug as we rode to the hospital with a purplish-black bruise in the shape of Iowa on my back.
I remember limply running into Toys R’ Us and hobbling through each isle as best I could to find a new and better Yoda action figure.
And I remember one week later brushing my teeth, flushing the toilet, and helplessly watching Yoda splash into the undersea voyage which he would never return.
